Kubernetes Training and Jitsi Deployment

stepping stone

“bespinian organized and conducted a Kubernetes training with us. The training was practical, engaging, and lead up to a specific use case. This approach made the concepts immediately relevant and easy to connect to practical challenges.”

Customer

stepping stone AG is a Swiss IT services company based in Bern, founded in 2004. The company specializes in engineering and automation of IT services with a strong focus on open-source solutions. stepping stone AG operates its own Swiss cloud infrastructure, stoney cloud, distributed across two data centers, offering scalable and highly available solutions. Their services include managed cloud offerings such as backup, monitoring, maintenance, and on-call support for small and medium-sized businesses in Switzerland.

Background

As a cloud provider with deep roots in open-source technologies such as OpenStack, Linux, and KVM, stepping stone AG recognized the growing importance of container technologies and Kubernetes in the modern IT landscape. With the recent expansion of their offering to include Container-as-a-Service on their stoney cloud platform, the team wanted to deepen their expertise in container orchestration to better serve their customers and operate their own infrastructure more effectively.

A further initiative was the deployment of Jitsi, an open-source video conferencing solution, on their Kubernetes clusters. This required not only technical implementation knowledge, but also a solid understanding of security best practices and stability aspects for running production workloads on Kubernetes.

Project Goal

The collaboration had the following objectives:

  • Build advanced Kubernetes knowledge within the stepping stone team
  • Enable the team to independently operate and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters
  • Successfully deploy Jitsi on their Kubernetes infrastructure using Helm
  • Ensure the deployment meets security and stability requirements for production use

bespinian’s Role

bespinian delivered a comprehensive training and consulting engagement over four half-days.

Container and Kubernetes Training

We conducted a structured training covering container fundamentals, Kubernetes usage, and operational best practices. The sessions were designed to build knowledge incrementally and enable the stepping stone team to work confidently with containerized workloads and understand the underlying concepts of Kubernetes architecture.

Jitsi Helm Chart Deployment

In hands-on collaboration with the stepping stone team, we supported the installation and configuration of the Jitsi Helm chart on one of their clusters. This practical exercise reinforced the training content while delivering immediate business value.

Security and Stability Review

We conducted a review of their Kubernetes setup with a focus on security hardening and operational stability. This included analysis of network policies, resource limits, pod security configurations, and other aspects critical for reliably running production workloads.

Technologies Used

  • Container Platform: Kubernetes
  • Deployment: Helm
  • Infrastructure: stoney cloud (OpenStack-based)

Key Results

  • Team trained in containers, Kubernetes usage and operations
  • Jitsi successfully deployed on Kubernetes using Helm
  • Security and stability review with actionable recommendations
